LADY GA GA 'BAD ROMANCE' VIDEO MAKEUP

Towards the end of the video Lady Ga Ga has a dark smokey look

OK, so I know I said last week I would be doing the tutorial for this look but I have just been really busy so I do feel  bad but instead im going to intoduce you to some of the people I subscribe to and respect what they do.

Temptalia, AKA Christine is a 24 year old from San Francisco has been blogging since 2007.  I subscribe to her daily emails where she features reviews on beauty and makeup products.

Last week Temptalia.com posted her take on Lady Ga Ga's smokey eye and listed the products she used.

Another Lady Ga Ga Bad Romance look I have seen is by a YouTube Guru that I subscribe to called Petrilude.

Petrilude AKA Josh is an uber talanted Makeup Artist who regularly posts 'how to' videos on YouTube. I soooo recommend you look at his past videos too.

I am mega gutted I couldnt get a still of his Lady Ga Ga look but please go and check his video out...Petrilude Lady Ga Ga Bad Romance video

Wednesday's FAQ 25/11/09

Hello

Had a day off work yesterday and spent most of it writing posts for the next couple of days because I will be in work.  Done beauty treatments in the evening for a client - eyelash perm, brow tint, pedicure! Gorgeous!  Oh also finally watched Khloe Kardashians Wedding and caught up on The Hills! Drama!

WEDNESDAY'S FAQ IS......

"Eyeliner scares me! how do I apply it?"

Ancient Eygptians were using kohl to line their eyes as far back as 3500 BC.  Although it was not for aesthetics purposes but to protect their eyes from the sun and they also believed it would prevent eye ailements.

There are 4 main types of eyeliner...

1) Liquid eyeliner - usually applied with a small brush or felt pen.  The liquid dries and it is easy for precise clean lines.

I personally dont use liquid liner on myself or clients so I dont have a brand I can recommend unfortunately!  Do you wear liquid  liner? got a favourite you want to tell us about?

2) Wax based eyeliner is usually applied from a pencil but not all pencils have the same consistency.
You want a pencil that has a creamy texture and does not drag the lid when applying but not too creamy so that it slides off the lid!

Ooh now this I like.  Urban Decay 24/7 are excellent creamy eyeliner pencils in an array of colours.  Urban Decay's holiday 'Super Stash' set (£18) is a sample of 9 pencils which includes their ever so popular pencil in Zero (black).

3) Kohl liner - is a softer/finer pencil with a smooth pearl finish.

Mac have kohl pencils in a range of shadesn for £12.  They brought out a shade of black called 'Feline' in their recent Style Black range which sold out very quickly - I hope they bring it back in another collection for me to get my paws on ;o)

4) Gel/Fluid liner is the newest method of liner and was originally a favourite for makeup artists but is now sold by most makeup brands.
I love it.  It would be my first choice for liner hands down.  MAC do Fluidline in 6 shades (£12) but I don't think many people would disagree with me if I said Bobbi Brown 'Long - Wear Gel Eyeliner'(£15) was numero uno (being Bobbi Brown's best selling product!)  'Long - Wear Gel Eyeliner can be found in 15 shades and is also sold as part of a set on QVC UK.

'Applying eyeliner'

Gel liner is to be applied with a very fine liner brush.

To apply eyeliner with a pencil you may find it easier if you have your elbow resting on a flat surface and you use a free-standing mirror.  Eyeliner is to be applied over other eye makeup and it's effect will contour your eyes making your lashes appear thicker and darker.

Make sure your pencil has been sharpened and swipe it on the back of your hand first to ensure it will glide on in one smooth line.  If your pencil is too sharp and scratches - then draw a line on a tissue to blunten.

Hold your eyeliner like you would a pen in your dominant hand and pull the eyelid taught (gently) with the other hand.

I personally find it easier to put eyeliner on in short sweeping strokes as opposed to one straight line.  I start at the outer corner of my eye moving towards the centre and I then go to the inner corner of the eye sweeping back to join my line up in the centre.  You can smudge to create a softer look.

If you want to put a flick on your eye just be aware that if you do this when your lid is closed - the line will be in a different place when your eye is open! you may find that where you think is the perfect place will in fact appear lower when you open your eyes and may be look droopy.

Some eyeliners can be placed on your waterline (the rim of your eye by the tear ducts) or your tightline (see pic below)

This creates more depth to your eye and will make your eyes appear smaller.  This is great to finish of a smokey eye!

I was going to do the tutorial for you myself but I have lots of hours in work this week :O( but hey we have lots of Thursday Tutorials coming up so contact me and tell me what makeup looks you would like me to recreate with a step by step guide for you lot!

Bye for now xoxo

Tuesday's Tip Bits 24/11/09

Morning,

I'm determined to finally watch Khloe Kardashian's E! Wedding Special that I recorded today.
Had a busy day for bookings yesterday...3 new makeup clients for December and a client for beauty treatments tonight :O)

TUESDAY'S TIP BITS

'Tip of the Week'

I wanted to tip you off on a product that is popping up everywhere in the USA beauty blogs I read and it's called 'My Spring It'.

Well what the yell is it?  My Spring It is a tool that allows you to remove facial hair - at home - fuss free.  If you look at the picture you can see it is a coiled spring that when applied in a rolling motion (see demo video) it will remove hairs from the root - even fine downy hair that is hard to see with plucking.

My only issue is that I dont' see how you can be precise when removing eyebrow hair (you would obviously need to tidy up with tweezers) but it is great for facial hair (cheeks, chin, lip).

You can order yours from the My Spring It website for $15.99 with $2.00 International shipping and an offer is on for buy 3 get 4th free.

 'Word Of The Week'

PEPTIDES

I am going to give you a very basic definition of what a peptide is and to do that I first of all need to talk to you about collagen.
Collagen put simply plumps and firms your skin.  External factors such as sun exposure, smoking and pollution destroy collagen resulting thinner skin and wrinkles.  You naturally produce more collagen when you are younger and this reduces with age - that is why you show signs of ageing.
Certain peptides are released when collagen breaks down and the peptides send a message for your body to produce more collagen.  Scientists have replicated the peptides and placed them in beauty products so when applied to your skin, your body see's this as a message to produce more collagen ergo more youthful plump and line free skin.

'Haul Of The Week'

I haven't bought much this week except for 4 sets of lashes by Ardell at Boots (about £5 a set).  They are 100% human hair and after buying a set of the 110's for myself I was very impressed so got some to  use on my clients at the weekend.  I bought Fairies, 105's, 110's and individual medium black lashes. I would recommend the 105's for 'going out makeup' they are nice and full.

Have you bought anything this week you would like to share with us? Comment or write on the My Life in Makeup Group Wall :O)

* * *

I won't be doing Tuesday's Tip Bits next week as I will have a guest blogger! Erin will be doing fortnightly posts on fashion and I suggest you get very blumin' excited as no one I know spends money on clothes like Erin does!

Velvet yay or nay?? log on next Tuesday to find out!

I will be back tomorrow for Wednesday's FAQ...

"I use eyeliner pencil but I am not sure if I do it right?  Are there any rules to follow and is there any difference between pencil and kohl?"

Thanks for reading - bye for now xoxo

Monday's 'Basics' and 'How To'...23/11/09

How was your weekend?

I went to see New Moon on Saturday night..a year waiting! I'm still Team Edward though, I have not been swayed! Have you been to see it yet? did it live up to your expectations?

MONDAY'S 'BASICS' AND 'HOW TO'.....SERIES

HAIR REMOVAL

As mentioned last week I am going to cover different methods of hair removal today to follow on from our eyebrow shaping master class last Thursday.

TWEEZING

If you check out Thursday's intro blog (19/11) you will see some handy tips for the perfect tweeze.

There are many pros and cons to tweezing but it is a quick and cheap method of hair removal - especially if you are in between waxes. The cons are it is painful and quite difficult to do if you wear glasses, and blonde hairs are easy to miss.

My tool of choice is by Tweezerman and they have an amazing choice of tweezers to choose from...check out their new Swarovski Crystal Polka Dot

Slant Tweezers at tweezerman.co.uk

WAXING

I would not recommend home waxing and advise to always have this done by a qualified beauty therapist.

An example of a contra indication to treatment (a reason to not perform) is you may be on medication that thins your skin (for Acne) which will result in bruising or even tearing of the skin, and certain medical illnesses such as diabetes are a no no.

Don't be sold short of your treatment, make sure you receive a consultation, are your clothes protected? has the therapist checked the temperature of the wax? is the work station clean with wooden disposable spatulas being used? If short hairs have been missed then the area should not be waxed over again...these hairs should be removed with tweezers. Have you received your after care on what to and what not to do following your treatment?

THREADING

Is becoming very popular and stalls are popping up everywhere. So what exactly is threading? It is an ancient method of hair removal which originated in Persia and involves using a thin twist of cotton to trim and remove hair. Most commonly threading is used for the eyebrows but can also be used for facial hair in men and women. Different to tweezing, threading can remove a whole row of hair at a time in a straight line. Threading removes the hair from the follicle and does not cause trauma to the skins surface so would be good for those with sensitive skin. The technique is not something that can be taught from a text book, the art of threading takes years of practice to perfect!

HAIR REMOVAL CREAMS

I'm not a fan. Hair removal creams are quick and painless, they leave a smooth surface, are cost effective and can be done at home. My belief is that if a cream's ingredients are so powerful they can dissolve your hair then they must be causing some damage to your skins surface. Allergic reactions are possible and the skin can become thin, red, causing abrasions and permanent sun damage. Defeats the purpose really if you were trying to make your muzzy subtle!

There are many hair removal creams on the market - Veet and Nair being those most advertised.

Hope you enjoyed reading my basic hair removal and how to guide. I will be back tomorrow with Tuesday's Tip Bits...stayed tuned as I am revealing the world's next big thing in home hair removal!!

If you have anything you like to see mentioned or featured in the blog get in touch!

Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow

xoxo

Friday's Fun Stuff 20/11/09

FRIDAY'S FUN STUFF

Got any plans for the weekend?  I'm going to see New Moon on Saturday night after doing 2 clients for makeup and I CAN NOT WAIT!! Have you read the Twilight Series? I'm obsessed and Kev (other half) calls me a big nerd! I think he is jealous ha ha

'Friday's Tag'

Today's tag is my '8 Most Worn Items'.  The tag has been done many times on YouTube and other blogs.  If you Google it you will see there is a set list of 8 items to cover.

1. Most Worn Lipstick / Gloss

I don't really wear lipstick or gloss because they make my throat feel funny (don't ask!) so I tend to just stick to good old Vaseline.  Im using Carmex at the moment which has a slight mentholy tingle to it.  I have also used Body Shop's Hemp lip balm.  I have recommended this to people and have heard nothing but good things from them (and no, I don't work for Body Shop At Home anymore - I just honestly think their hemp products are great).  I stay away from anything you have to stick your finger in to apply so my answer is going to be Body Shop Hemp Lip Balm £3.90

2.  Most Worn Earrings

I am not really a jewellery wearer either! If I am going to wear anything at all it would be costume jewellery from Primark or Topshop

I have had these earrings in for a couple of weeks now though.  They were part of a set of 3 in gold or silver from H and M.

3. Most Worn Shirt

Anyone who know's me will know that fashion is not really my concern at the moment.  I want to lose weight so don't want to spend a lot of money on clothes at this size and any spare money I do have will go on my kit (I wish I could say spare money is for my savings but that is just never gonna happen).
I'm going to pick this T-Shirt I got from Next a little while ago.  I think it was £15.  Any future fashion posts will be covered by my friend  Erin O.  She has a subscription to Vogue so that is certificate enough in my eyes! ;o)

4. Most Worn Nail Polish
I am loving Sephora by O.P.I Metro Chic Matte nail polish.  I had not used a matte polish before so did not really know what to expect - this is a purple/grey shade.  Fafinettex3 one of the YouTuber's I follow recommended it and Erin kindly got it for me when she recently went to LA.  Why is O.P.I so much cheaper in USA?

5. Most Worn Shoes
Are my Converse which are fairly new.  I feel more like I belong in the Twilight generation when I wear these :O)

6. Most Worn Hair Product

I dont wear hair product as much as I used to when I was younger and there are a couple of hair products I have on my 'Lust List' that I would like to try out.  Frederick Frekai Shampoo at Space NK is popping up everywhere but not cheap at 20 quid a bottle! Also, I have been wanting to try Bumble and Bumble's Thickening Spray for a while now (feel free to get me it for Christmas :O)
My answer would probably be good old L'Oreal Elnett Hairspray - £5.89

7. Most Worn Perfume

I only have 2 perfumes at the moment...sad..I know.  So out of Next's Star (£6) and Marc Jacobs Daisy £49.00 from Boots it's got to be Daisy! A very strong citrus smell.  I did just finish a bottle of Vera Wang Princess though which would have pipped Daisy to the post.

8. Most Worn Handbag/Purse

If you read yesterday's post it would be the Birken style bag I got from Matalan about 2 months ago.
I have loads of bags but dont tend to alternate them.  I find one and stick with it until the zip comes off or the strap breaks!

What are your most worn 8 items? leave a comment and let me know! Do you have an idea for a Tag??

FRIDAY'S FUN QUESTION

"How would you spend a million pounds?"

OOOh how exciting.  I  like this question.  Well..apart from the obligatory money to family, money to friends, money to charity, pay off debts blah blah blah I would...
1. Organise a year long trip around the world
2. Invest in the stock market
3. Buy property (a quote that sticks in mind is 'buy land because we ain't making any more of it' - too true)
4. Get Invisalign Braces

Welcome to my 1st official post!

Hello everyone :O)

Welcome to my first post....its gonna be a long one so stick with it!

MONDAY'S 'BACK TO BASICS' AND 'HOW TO...' SERIES

So let’s get back to basics with EYEBROWS

Autumn 09 trend predicts wear them thick, dark and bushy.  Think Madonna and Brooke Shields circa mid eighties.
Now dense dark brows does not translate to wiry and unruly - I said Madonna not Bernard Manning! So to help y’all avoid making that mistake I am going to give you a master class on finding the perfect brow shape.

Eyebrows shape and balance your face, they highlight your best features and have even been likened to a fast free face lift!

What you will need
  • Eyebrow comb
  • Eyebrow pencil/lip liner
  • Tweezers
  • Small nail scissors (for the brave)

A - Where should my eyebrows start?
Look in a mirror - take your pencil and hold vertically against your outer nostril. If you drag your pencil down at this angle you can mark where your brows should ideally start.

B - Where should the highest point of my eyebrow be?
If you hold your pencil against your outer nostril and look straight ahead - line your pencil through the centre of your pupil.  Drag your pencil down drawing a line.  This is the ideal arch in your eyebrow.

C - Where should my eyebrows end?
Hold your pencil against your outer nostril and run it at an angle through to the corner of your eye - drag your pencil down and this is where your brows should ideally finish.

Now I would like to add that although this is a guideline - eyebrows grow in different ways and different directions.  My brows finish short of the ‘ideal’ finish line so I just powder that line in.  Remember 'your eyebrows are sisters not twins' :O)

TIPS FOR A GOOD TWEEZE

1. Plenty of light
2. Use a warm compress to open pores (or after a bath/shower)
3. Use an astringent I.e. Witch Hazel to clean the area
4. Brush brows up to see natural arch of your brow
5. Pull skin taut as this will ease the pain
6. Tweeze from as close to the root as possible and pull in the direction of hair growth
7. Always remove hair from underneath the eyebrows
8. Take your time and remove one row of hairs at a time
9. After one row on each eye take a step back - look - be careful not to over pluck, work your shape up
    to accentuate the highest point
10. After tweezing soothe with a warm compress - do not use lotion this may cause irritation
11. And for the brave…if you have long brow hairs you can brush them up with a comb and trim any
excess hair outside your natural shape

Check out Monday's blog when I will be covering different methods of hair removal in our basics series.

TUESDAY'S TIP BITS
'Tip Of The Week'
To ensure you don’t over pluck; prior to tweezing draw a template of your ideal brow shape with a dark brow pencil or powder - then only remove hairs that are out of this shape when tweezing!

'Word Of The Week'

Our word of the week is Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's). AHA’s are often in products that claim to rejuvenate the skin and aide desquamation (the shedding of the outer layers of the skin). Products with AHA’s are recommended particularly for more mature skin and are to be used in moderation as they do contain acid and over use could cause your skin to become sensitive.

Do you have a burning question that you would like me to cover in Word Of The Week? Future Word of the Week's will include Collagen, Retinol and Peptides.

WEDNESDAY’S FAQ
“I have oily eyelids - how can I stop my eyeshadow from creasing or disappearing completely?”

Well, one thing I would recommend to everyone as a must have in their makeup kit is an EYE PRIMER. Not only will it act as a base to hold on to your shadow and make it last longer, it will also even out any pigmentation in your lids and make your colour pop.
I use a few different eye primers depending on what skin type my client has and what effect I’m going for.

Here are a few of my favourites….

Urban Decay Primer Potion

This is Urban Decay’s #1 best seller. You only need a small amount for application and as it dries you may feel your lids getting tighter…this is normal! I would be more inclined to use Urban Decay’s Primer Potion for ‘going out’ makeup as I’m confident in its staying power.

£11.00 from Boots or Debenhams Urban Decay Counter

MAC Paint Pots

MAC have a number of Paint Pots in matte and shimmer shades with flesh tones and vibrant colours.  I have Bare Study which has a golden shimmer, Soft Ochre which is matte yellow tone and Painterly a matte with pink tones.  I really like Paint Pots as a primer and I would use these daily on their own to even out my eyelids or under shadow.  If you wanted to choose one I would reccommend Painterly.

Get yours for £12.50 at MAC

Too Faced Shadow Insurance

Now from the extensive product research I do, I think it’s safe to say that Shadow Insurance should be included as one of the top 3 eye primers.  I do not have this but I assure you it is on my ‘Lust List’.  Have you used Shadow Insurance?  Send me a review to be featured!

£10.77 (plus p+p) asos.com

Would you like to see me do a video on YouTube showing different eye primers and their application? Leave a comment below and let me know!

How to apply eye primer

Ok…although I’m not a fan of using my fingers I admit I do use a clean finger to apply primer. The shape of your finger makes it easier to apply all over your lid/socket and the heat from your finger helps the primer to soften and blend. Allow to dry for a couple of minutes before applying your shadow on top.

THURSDAY’S TUTORIAL
Watched Lady Ga Ga’s Bad Romance video and wondered how she got those deep smokey eyes? Well fret no longer as next Thursday I will be showing you just how to get that look! I wont be wearing a spandex leotard to show you though!

FRIDAY'S FUN STUFF :o)
This weeks tag is ‘What’s in my Handbag' or in America it would be ‘Whats in my Purse’ as their purse is our handbag and our purse is their wallet…Ok I’m confused…lets not go there!

So what IS in Alex’s Handbag I hear you all shout?

Now, I am going to do this honestly and not remove anything (sooo yes that does include my medication (for the hypochondria!)

What, Why, Who, When and Where?

INTRODUCING MY LIFE IN MAKEUP BLOG

What is the purpose of me writing a blog?

I love makeup and beauty and I love writing, I love sharing information and I love researching the industry so I thought why not put it all in one place?

Why am I doing this?

I want to answer the questions I get asked on a daily a basis. I want to share with you products I have bought or products coming on to the market. I want to show you Makeup tutorials and advertise my services.
(Eventually I want to do videos for YouTube but it is so much harder than it looks especially with editing etc! Watch this space anyway...)

Who am I and why should you trust what I say?

For those of you reading that don't know me...my name is Alex and I am qualified in Fashion and Photographic Makeup and Level 2 Beauty Therapy. Makeup is my passion..my hobby and although it may be perceived as shallow by some - I see it as an art form. I will review products honestly and any tips I share will be 100% accurate to my knowledge. If you ask me a question and I dont know the answer then I will certainly find out for you from a reliable source. Any information I have obtained from other sites I will always include a link to.

When can you expect to read my little golden nuggets of information?

I spend hours daily reading and researching beauty blogs, watching my favourite Guru's on YouTube and making endless lists of things to buy and tips to try out.
The purpose of this blog is to save you the leg work...this can be your one stop shop for all things beauty and makeup.

So what I plan to do is announce daily on Twitter (MyLifeInMakeup) anything I have just bought or tried out for the first time..any updates I have etc.

I will blog daily Monday to Friday and each day will have a different theme i.e 'Basic how to' series each Monday, Tuesday's Tip, Wednesday's FAQ's, Thursday's Tutorial, Friday's Fun Stuff. I'm still trying things out to see what type of information I want to tell you and the layouts may change with feedback I get from you so bear with me...we will get there!!

Where can I follow this awe inspiring makeup guru and how can I contact her you ask?

Well guys and dolls to help me get started I would love it if you could email me any questions or suggestions you have and anything you would like me to include in the blog to mylifeinmakeup@yahoo.com. Join my Facebook Group My Life In Makeup. You can follow me on Twitter MyLifeInMakeup and follow my blog here at mylifeinmakeupuk@blogspot.com (dont forget the uk bit for the blog address only!!)

My first post will be on Thursday 19th November and I'm doing 1 week's worth of posts on that day so you get an idea of what to expect from the blog.

I look forward to your emails and comments and please recommend my blog to a friend :O)

Bye for now
