Hello everyone :O)
Welcome to my first post....its gonna be a long one so stick with it!
So let’s get back to basics with EYEBROWS
Autumn 09 trend predicts wear them thick, dark and bushy. Think Madonna and Brooke Shields circa mid eighties.
Now dense dark brows does not translate to wiry and unruly - I said Madonna not Bernard Manning! So to help y’all avoid making that mistake I am going to give you a master class on finding the perfect brow shape.
Eyebrows shape and balance your face, they highlight your best features and have even been likened to a fast free face lift!
What you will need
- Eyebrow comb
- Eyebrow pencil/lip liner
- Tweezers
- Small nail scissors (for the brave)
A - Where should my eyebrows start?
Look in a mirror - take your pencil and hold vertically against your outer nostril. If you drag your pencil down at this angle you can mark where your brows should ideally start.B - Where should the highest point of my eyebrow be?
If you hold your pencil against your outer nostril and look straight ahead - line your pencil through the centre of your pupil. Drag your pencil down drawing a line. This is the ideal arch in your eyebrow.
C - Where should my eyebrows end?
Hold your pencil against your outer nostril and run it at an angle through to the corner of your eye - drag your pencil down and this is where your brows should ideally finish.
Now I would like to add that although this is a guideline - eyebrows grow in different ways and different directions. My brows finish short of the ‘ideal’ finish line so I just powder that line in. Remember 'your eyebrows are sisters not twins' :O)
TIPS FOR A GOOD TWEEZE
1. Plenty of light
2. Use a warm compress to open pores (or after a bath/shower)
3. Use an astringent I.e. Witch Hazel to clean the area
4. Brush brows up to see natural arch of your brow
5. Pull skin taut as this will ease the pain
6. Tweeze from as close to the root as possible and pull in the direction of hair growth
7. Always remove hair from underneath the eyebrows
8. Take your time and remove one row of hairs at a time
9. After one row on each eye take a step back - look - be careful not to over pluck, work your shape up
to accentuate the highest point
10. After tweezing soothe with a warm compress - do not use lotion this may cause irritation
11. And for the brave…if you have long brow hairs you can brush them up with a comb and trim any
excess hair outside your natural shape
Check out Monday's blog when I will be covering different methods of hair removal in our basics series.
TUESDAY'S TIP BITS'Tip Of The Week'
To ensure you don’t over pluck; prior to tweezing draw a template of your ideal brow shape with a dark brow pencil or powder - then only remove hairs that are out of this shape when tweezing!
'Word Of The Week'
Our word of the week is Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's). AHA’s are often in products that claim to rejuvenate the skin and aide desquamation (the shedding of the outer layers of the skin). Products with AHA’s are recommended particularly for more mature skin and are to be used in moderation as they do contain acid and over use could cause your skin to become sensitive.
Do you have a burning question that you would like me to cover in Word Of The Week? Future Word of the Week's will include Collagen, Retinol and Peptides.
WEDNESDAY’S FAQ
“I have oily eyelids - how can I stop my eyeshadow from creasing or disappearing completely?”Well, one thing I would recommend to everyone as a must have in their makeup kit is an EYE PRIMER. Not only will it act as a base to hold on to your shadow and make it last longer, it will also even out any pigmentation in your lids and make your colour pop.
I use a few different eye primers depending on what skin type my client has and what effect I’m going for. Here are a few of my favourites….
Urban Decay Primer Potion
This is Urban Decay’s #1 best seller. You only need a small amount for application and as it dries you may feel your lids getting tighter…this is normal! I would be more inclined to use Urban Decay’s Primer Potion for ‘going out’ makeup as I’m confident in its staying power.
£11.00 from Boots or Debenhams Urban Decay Counter
MAC Paint Pots
MAC have a number of Paint Pots in matte and shimmer shades with flesh tones and vibrant colours. I have Bare Study which has a golden shimmer, Soft Ochre which is matte yellow tone and Painterly a matte with pink tones. I really like Paint Pots as a primer and I would use these daily on their own to even out my eyelids or under shadow. If you wanted to choose one I would reccommend Painterly.Get yours for £12.50 at MAC
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Now from the extensive product research I do, I think it’s safe to say that Shadow Insurance should be included as one of the top 3 eye primers. I do not have this but I assure you it is on my ‘Lust List’. Have you used Shadow Insurance? Send me a review to be featured!
£10.77 (plus p+p) asos.com
How to apply eye primer
Ok…although I’m not a fan of using my fingers I admit I do use a clean finger to apply primer. The shape of your finger makes it easier to apply all over your lid/socket and the heat from your finger helps the primer to soften and blend. Allow to dry for a couple of minutes before applying your shadow on top.
